Boot error codes
Read the code carefully. The Original Xbox shows numeric error codes on a Frag or error screen. The number is a clue, not a verdict, and several codes share root causes like a bad or locked hard drive. Note the exact number before acting.
What the codes mean
These codes appear during the boot sequence when the system fails a check. The most common ones cluster around storage and drive faults.
| Code | Typical meaning | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| 05 | Hard drive not locked or wrong lock state | Drive lock status, EEPROM key |
| 06 | Hard drive unreadable or failing | IDE cable, drive health |
| 07 | Hard drive timeout or kernel fault | Reseat cables, test another drive |
| 13 | General dashboard or kernel error | Dashboard files, drive contents |
| 16 | Dashboard files missing or corrupt | Reinstall dashboard |
| 21 | Dashboard launch or settings error | Clear settings, check dashboard |
Working through it
- Identify. Match the on-screen number to the table above.
- Check cables. Reseat IDE and power connectors first, since loose cables mimic drive failure.
- Verify the drive. Confirm lock state, key, and that dashboard files are intact.
- Rebuild if needed. Reinstall the dashboard or restore the drive on a modded console.
