Softmod failed

Do not panic and wipe the drive. A failed softmod or boot loop is often recoverable. Wiping or relocking the drive blindly can turn a fixable problem into a bricked console. Diagnose first.

Why softmods loop

A softmod replaces or chains the dashboard to load homebrew. If those files are corrupt, missing, or pointed at the wrong path, the console can loop at boot, hang on a logo, or drop an error. Power interruptions during install are a frequent cause.

  1. Note the symptom. Distinguish a continuous reboot loop from a hang or an error number, as each suggests a different fix.
  2. Boot a recovery path. Many softmods leave a recovery or original dashboard option. Use it to get back into a working environment.
  3. Repair the dashboard. Reinstall or restore the homebrew dashboard files over the network or from a known-good backup.
  4. Restore from backup. If you saved the original dashboard and EEPROM before modding, restoring them returns the console to stock.

Prevention

Always back up the EEPROM and original dashboard before softmodding, and never power off mid-install. A good backup makes a failed softmod a minor inconvenience rather than a disaster. troubleshooting softmod
