Controllers

Controllers

The controller is more than a game pad on the Original Xbox; it is also your main input device for navigating custom dashboards, browsing menus, and even transferring files during certain setup steps.

The controller ports

The console's controller ports are, electrically, a form of USB. This is why adapters exist that let Xbox controllers work on a PC and, conversely, let some standard USB devices connect to the console. For modding, this matters because the ports are how you interact with every step of the process.

Memory units

The original controllers feature expansion slots that accept memory units, small removable storage cards. Historically these have been useful in softmodding because a save-based exploit can be delivered through a memory unit. They remain handy for moving small files between consoles.

Controller types

Two main controller styles exist: the large original "Duke" pad and the smaller "Controller S" that became standard later. Both work identically for navigation and modding; choice is purely about comfort.

USB connectivity

Because the ports are USB-based, a simple adapter lets you connect a USB flash drive to the console. Many modders use this as a convenient way to transfer the files and tools needed during setup.

A working controller in a known-good port is all you need to navigate the entire softmod process, so test yours before you begin.
