Power supply
Mains voltage hazard. The power supply handles lethal AC voltage and stores charge in large capacitors even when unplugged. Do not open or probe it unless you understand high-voltage safety and capacitor discharge. When in doubt, replace the unit instead.
Symptoms of a failing PSU
A dying power supply causes no-boot, random shutdowns, or a console that only starts when warm. Original Xbox supplies use a few connector styles across revisions, so confirm yours matches before replacing.
- Discharge and inspect. Unplug, wait, and after safe discharge open the supply to look for bulged or leaking capacitors and scorched components.
- Recap. The most common fix is replacing aged electrolytic capacitors with quality low-ESR equivalents of matching rating.
- Check the fuse and traces. Test the fuse and inspect for cracked solder joints around heavy connectors.
- Test under load. Reassemble and verify stable startup, ideally watching for steady voltages.
Replacement
If repair is beyond your comfort, a known-good replacement supply matched to your console revision is the safe route. Some users fit a modern aftermarket supply built for the Xbox. advanced high-voltage
