Methods compared

Each modding route suits a different owner. The table below summarizes the trade-offs so you can match a method to your console revision, comfort level, and goals.

Method Hardware work Reversible Revisions Best for
ENDGAME softmod None Yes All (broad) First-timers wanting a free, safe start
TSOP flash Light soldering No 1.0 to 1.5 A permanent, chip-free modified boot
OpenXenium Header soldering Yes (removable) All (1.6 header rebuild) Open-source fans who value longevity
Aladdin XT / Plus2 Header soldering Yes (removable) All (1.6 header rebuild) Budget builds and 1.6 consoles

How to read this

If you want zero risk to the hardware, start with the softmod. If you prefer the modification baked into the board, a modchip is switchable and survives a corrupted dashboard. TSOP flashing sits between the two: permanent and chip-free, but only on early revisions and not reversible.

Common thread

Regardless of method, back up the EEPROM first and confirm your console revision. The revision determines whether TSOP flashing is even possible and whether a modchip's LPC header needs rebuilding.
