First boot
Once your softmod, modchip, or flashed BIOS is in place, the first boot is where you confirm everything works. Take a few minutes to verify the console behaves as expected before settling in.
What to check on first boot
- It boots to the custom dashboard rather than the stock one, indicating the modification loaded correctly.
- The stock dashboard is still reachable on a softmod, confirming the dual-boot setup is intact.
- Applications launch from the dashboard menu without errors.
- Video and audio look and sound correct for your display settings.
Confirm your backups
Verify that your EEPROM backup and any recovery files are saved both on the console and on your PC. This is the moment to be certain, while everything is fresh and working.
If something is off
A console that boots straight to the stock dashboard may mean the softmod did not install fully. One that fails to boot after a flash or chip install points to a hardware issue to recheck. In most cases your backups let you recover and try again.
You are ready
With a clean first boot and backups confirmed, your Original Xbox is ready for legal homebrew, media playback, and backups of games you own. Keep your EEPROM and recovery files somewhere safe so future maintenance, including a hard drive upgrade, stays simple. Enjoy a console that does far more than it did out of the box.
