Choosing a method
Choosing a Method
There are three broad ways to unlock an Original Xbox. The right choice depends on your motherboard revision, your tolerance for hardware work, and what you want to achieve.
| Method | Best for | Revisions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Softmod (ENDGAME) recommended | Most users; reversible, no tools | All (1.0-1.6b) | Easy |
| Modchip | Robust, flexible setups | All (1.0-1.6b) | Hard |
| TSOP flash | Modchip-free custom BIOS | 1.0-1.5 only | Medium-Hard |
Softmod
The Rocky5 ENDGAME softmod is the path we recommend for nearly everyone. It is save-based, needs no soldering, works on every revision, and is fully reversible. For homebrew, emulation, and media playback it is more than sufficient.
Modchip
A modchip such as the OpenXenium or Aladdin XT/XT Plus2 adds a hardware BIOS source. It survives a wiped hard drive and supports advanced recovery, but installation usually requires soldering.
TSOP flash
TSOP flashing writes a custom BIOS to the onboard chip, removing the need for a modchip. It is available only on revisions 1.0 through 1.5, since 1.6/1.6b boards cannot be flashed.
Our suggestion
Start with the softmod. You can always add a modchip or flash later if your needs grow.
