Themes & Skins
Part of the appeal of a custom dashboard is making it your own. Most Original Xbox dashboards support themes or skins that change colors, backgrounds, fonts, icons, and sounds without altering how the dashboard functions.
How skinning works
A skin is typically a folder of image and configuration files that the dashboard loads at startup. Swapping skins is usually as simple as copying a new skin folder over FTP and selecting it in the settings menu.
- UnleashX uses a flexible skin system tied to its config, letting you restyle menus extensively.
- XBMC4Gamers, built on XBMC, supports rich skins with artwork-heavy layouts.
- EvoX offers simpler visual customization through its configuration file.
Match the skin to the build
Skins are written for a specific dashboard and often a specific version. A skin made for one dashboard won't work on another, and an outdated skin may display incorrectly. Always grab skins intended for your exact dashboard build.
Themes are purely cosmetic, so they're a safe, low-risk way to experiment. If a skin looks broken, simply switch back to the default. For the best results, keep your original working skin folder backed up on your PC so you can always return to a clean look.
