FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is removing the clock capacitor safe?
Yes. The clock capacitor is not required for the console to function. Removing it prevents future leakage and corrosion, and the only effect is that the clock resets when the console loses power.
Will my Xbox still keep time without it?
Only while plugged in. Without the capacitor the clock resets on power loss, but homebrew dashboards handle this gracefully and you can reset the time easily.
Do I need to mod my Xbox to do maintenance?
No. Cleaning, recapping, fan service, and clock capacitor removal are hardware tasks that require no modification. Modding is only needed for storage swaps and homebrew.
Why is my hard drive locked?
The Xbox locks its drive with a key derived from the EEPROM. This is by design. You need the EEPROM key to unlock or relock the drive.
Can I replace the hard drive with an SSD?
Yes, using an IDE-to-SATA adapter on a modded console, with the new drive prepared and locked to your EEPROM key.
My DVD drive stopped reading discs. Can it be fixed?
Sometimes. Cleaning the laser lens may revive it, but a worn laser eventually fails for good. Many owners switch to running games from a hard drive.
What do the boot error numbers mean?
Numeric Frag codes flag a failed boot check, most often storage related. See the boot error code reference to interpret your specific number.
Is softmodding reversible?
Generally yes, if you backed up the original dashboard and EEPROM first. Always make those backups before modding.
Why does my console only boot when warm?
That symptom usually points to aging capacitors on the motherboard or power supply, and recapping often resolves it.
