Original Xbox Softmodding

Welcome to a practical guide for getting more out of the Original Xbox, Microsoft's first console released in 2001. With a little setup you can transform this aging machine into a capable platform for homebrew applications, classic-game emulation, and a full-featured media center for your own legally owned content.

This wiki focuses entirely on legal, hobbyist uses: running open-source software, playing back personal media files, and replacing the stock dashboard with a friendlier interface. We do not cover piracy, copyrighted ROMs, or commercial game backups.

Where to start

If you are new, read the pages in order. Begin with what the platform can do, confirm your console is compatible, then learn why backing up the EEPROM is the single most important first step before any modification.

The recommended path for most people is a software modification (softmod) using the Rocky5 ENDGAME tool. It requires no soldering, works on every motherboard revision from 1.0 through 1.6/1.6b, and is fully reversible. Hardware options such as TSOP flashing and modchips exist for those who want them, but they carry more risk and have stricter revision requirements.

Throughout this guide we highlight motherboard-revision compatibility, because what works on an early 1.0 board may differ from a late 1.6b board. Knowing your revision is essential, so we devote several pages to identifying and understanding it.

Take your time, read carefully, and always make backups. A patient afternoon of setup rewards you with a console that stays useful for years.
