HDD locked

The lock is by design. The Original Xbox locks its hard drive with a password derived from the EEPROM. A locked or undetected drive is one of the most common faults, and the EEPROM key is essential to recovery. Never lose that key.

Understanding the lock

Each console generates a drive lock password from data stored in its EEPROM. If the drive is moved, the EEPROM is altered, or the lock state is wrong, the console reports a storage error such as an 05 or 06 Frag code and refuses to boot.

  1. Confirm cabling. Reseat the IDE ribbon and power connector first, since a loose cable looks exactly like a missing drive.
  2. Read the error. Match any Frag code to the error code reference to tell a lock problem from a dead drive.
  3. Recover the key. With a modded console or the right tool, read the EEPROM to obtain the lock key.
  4. Unlock or relock. Use the key to unlock the drive for access, or relock it to the console so the stock dashboard accepts it.

If the drive is dead

If the drive spins up but is unreadable even after unlocking, it has likely failed. Prepare a replacement drive on a modded console, locking it with the same EEPROM key, or convert to SATA storage. troubleshooting storage
