Clock capacitor

The Clock Capacitor Problem

If you own an Original Xbox, there is one hardware issue you should understand regardless of whether you ever mod the console: the clock capacitor. It is one of the most common causes of failure in these machines.

What it does

The clock capacitor helps the console keep time briefly while unplugged. It is a small component on the motherboard, and on many boards it was a type that degrades badly with age.

Over the years this capacitor commonly leaks, releasing corrosive fluid onto the motherboard. The leakage can eat through nearby traces and damage the board, leading to boot failures, instability, or a console that will not power on at all.

Why it matters before modding

A leaking cap can produce symptoms that look like a botched mod even when your modding work was fine. Inspecting it first separates hardware faults from software ones, so you are not chasing a problem in the wrong place.

What owners do about it

Because the capacitor provides only a minor convenience feature, a common community approach is to remove it entirely so it can never leak again. Some owners replace it instead. Either way, addressing it protects the board long term.

Check every revision

This concern applies broadly across revisions, though it is most associated with earlier boards. Whenever you open a console, take a moment to inspect the area around the clock capacitor for any sign of residue or corrosion.
