Won't boot

Start with the clock capacitor. A leaking clock capacitor is one of the most common reasons an aging Xbox stops booting. Before deeper diagnosis, open the console and inspect that area for corrosion.

Narrowing the cause

A console that will not boot can fail at power, storage, drive, or board level. Work from simplest to hardest so you do not chase the wrong fault.

  1. Confirm power. Check the outlet, cable, and power supply. Listen for the fan and watch for any front-panel light at all.
  2. Read the light and any error. A solid green light with no video, a flashing light, or an on-screen Frag error each points in a different direction. Note exactly what you see.
  3. Inspect the board. Look for clock capacitor leakage, corroded traces, and bulged capacitors. Clean and repair as needed.
  4. Test storage and drive. A locked, missing, or failed hard drive, or a dead DVD drive, can halt boot. Reseat IDE and power cables.

Next steps

If you get an on-screen error number, consult the Boot and Frag error code page. If the light flashes a color pattern, see the Flashing light page. For a console that boots but then loops, see the Softmod failed page. troubleshooting
