32X

32X

The 32X is a mushroom-shaped add-on that plugs into the cartridge slot and boosts the console's graphical power. It was Sega's attempt to extend the 16-bit machine's life with a small library of enhanced games.

What it does

  • Extra processing — Adds horsepower for more colors and faster 3D-style visuals than the base console.
  • Its own games — A modest catalog of 32X-specific cartridges.
  • Stacking — Can be combined with the Sega CD for a small set of games that use both.

Compatibility

The 32X works on Model 1 and Model 2 consoles. Like the Sega CD, it cannot be used on the Model 3, which lacks the necessary support. Setup can be fussy because the add-on needs its own power and a video pass-through cable.

The 32X requires its own power supply and a link cable on top of the console's own. Cable and power conflicts are a common source of frustration, so plan your wiring before assembling a stacked setup.

A niche but interesting add-on

The 32X library is small and the hardware fiddly, which is why it is more of a collector's curiosity than an essential upgrade. Still, its handful of standout titles make it worth exploring for enthusiasts.

If you want the complete classic stack, a Model 1 or 2 with both the Sega CD and 32X delivers the full late-era Sega experience.
