Before you begin
Before You Begin
A little preparation prevents most modding mistakes. Before you order parts or pick up a soldering iron, work through the steps below so you know exactly what your console is and what you want from it.
Identify your hardware
Open the console and find the VA number printed on the mainboard. This tells you the precise revision, which affects RGB quality, audio wiring, and how a region mod should be installed. The model number on the case alone is not enough.
Decide your goal
Are you after convenient game loading, a sharper picture, import support, or all three? Your goal determines whether you need a simple plug-in flashcart or an internal solder job.
- Confirm the model and board revision.
- Choose which upgrade(s) you actually want.
- Check that your chosen method suits your model.
- Gather the right tools and parts in advance.
- Test the console works before modifying it.
Test first
Always confirm the console powers on and plays a game before you change anything. Troubleshooting is far easier when you know the starting point was healthy.
If a mod requires soldering and you have never used an iron, practice on a scrap board first. Many upgrades, especially flashcarts, need no soldering at all and are a great place to start.
