Model 2

Model 2

The Model 2 is the smaller, rounded redesign that followed the original. It is the most common revision, easy to find cheaply, and a solid all-round choice for most upgrades.

Strengths

  • Widely available — Produced in huge numbers, so spares and replacement parts are easy to source.
  • Add-on support — Works with both the Sega CD and the 32X, like the Model 1.
  • Good RGB — RGB output is good, though many enthusiasts rate Model 1 as slightly cleaner.

Things to know

Model 2 boards span several VA revisions, and audio quality varies between them. Some revisions have noisier sound circuitry than others, so check your VA number if pristine audio matters to you. All Model 2 units accept the same flashcarts as the rest of the family.

A practical pick

If you want a capable, affordable base that still supports the add-ons, the Model 2 is hard to beat. It does almost everything the Model 1 does for less money.

For most players, a Model 2 with a flashcart and an RGB cable is a thoroughly satisfying setup.
