Is My Genesis Compatible?
Almost every Genesis or Mega Drive can be modified in some way, but which upgrades make sense depends on your board revision. Use the table below as a quick reference, then confirm your exact model on the Identifying your model page.
| Model | Flashcart | RGB output | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 1 (early) | Yes | Excellent | Best RGB source; some have a wide slot fitting JP carts |
| Model 1 (later) | Yes | Excellent | Narrower slot; widening helps for imports |
| Model 2 | Yes | Good | Smaller, common, stereo via headphone-era boards varies |
| Model 3 | Yes | RGB capable | Outputs RGB but audio is mono only; no add-on support |
Add-on compatibility
The Sega CD and 32X attach to Model 1 and Model 2 consoles. The Model 3 does not support either add-on, and it also lacks an expansion port, so it is the worst choice if you want a full classic stack.
Quick takeaway
If video quality and add-on support matter most, a Model 1 is the strongest all-around platform. If you only want a flashcart for cartridge games, any model works fine.
Flashcarts like the Mega EverDrive Pro and Mega SD work across all three models, so SD-based gaming is universally available.
