IGR & overclock

Caution: The modifications below involve soldering to the console's CPU and reset circuitry. Mistakes can brick the board or cause instability. Overclocking in particular is not guaranteed to work and can break games that rely on precise timing.

In-Game-Reset and overclock

These two popular mods change how the console behaves at runtime. One is a quality-of-life feature; the other is an experiment in performance.

  1. Plan In-Game-Reset (IGR). IGR lets you reset to the menu or title screen using a controller button combination instead of reaching for the console's reset switch. It is especially handy with a flashcart, where you reset often to swap games.
  2. Wire IGR. The mod taps the reset line and a controller input, routing them through a small logic circuit or a programmed microcontroller so the chosen button combo triggers a reset. Some flashcarts include this functionality built in.
  3. Understand overclocking. Overclocking raises the 68000 CPU clock above its stock speed, aiming to reduce slowdown in demanding games. Results vary widely by board and game.
  4. Apply the overclock. This typically means replacing or feeding a faster clock signal to the CPU. Expect to test extensively, as many titles assume stock timing and will glitch, run too fast, or crash.

Recommendation

IGR is a safe, high-value mod most owners enjoy. Overclocking is best treated as a hobbyist curiosity rather than a reliable upgrade.
