Sega CD

The Sega CD, known as the Mega CD outside North America, is an add-on that attaches to the console and adds a CD-ROM drive. It brought full-motion video, CD-quality audio, and larger games to the platform.

What it adds

  • CD-based games — A library of titles that ship on disc rather than cartridge.
  • Enhanced audio — Red Book CD audio for richer soundtracks.
  • Extra hardware — Additional processing used by some games for scaling and rotation effects.

Compatibility

The Sega CD attaches to Model 1 and Model 2 consoles. The Model 3 cannot use it, as it has no expansion port. Fit and connection differ between the add-on revisions, so match the add-on to your console generation.

Skip the hardware with a flashcart

Both the Mega EverDrive Pro and the Mega SD emulate Sega CD games directly from an SD card. If you only want to play the games, a flashcart avoids the cost, bulk, and aging drive of the physical add-on.

Living with the real thing

Original Sega CD units use a laser drive and, on some revisions, an internal battery for saves. Both can degrade with age. If you want the authentic experience, expect to maintain the drive and watch for save-related issues, or choose flashcart emulation for reliability.
