Regions
Regions
The Genesis was sold worldwide, and its hardware came in regional flavors that affect both which games run and how the picture is displayed. Understanding regions helps you decide whether you need a region mod.
The three main regions
- Japan — The Mega Drive's home market, running at 60 Hz. Japanese carts are physically a different shape on some consoles.
- North America (NTSC-U) — The Genesis, also 60 Hz, with its own region lock.
- Europe (PAL) — The Mega Drive at 50 Hz, which can cause some games to run slower and with borders.
Region vs refresh rate
Region lock and the 50/60 Hz refresh rate are separate but related. Many games check region; many also assume a specific refresh rate. A good switchless mod lets you change both, so a PAL machine can run NTSC games at full 60 Hz speed.
| Region | Refresh | Common issue |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | 60 Hz | Cart shape on some units |
| NTSC-U | 60 Hz | Region lock |
| PAL | 50 Hz | Slower, bordered games |
Two barriers, not one
To run an import smoothly you may need to clear a software region check and match the correct refresh rate. A switchless mod handles both; physical fit is a separate matter covered under cart-slot widening.
