FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which model has the best video?
The Model 1 is generally regarded as the best for clean analog and RGB video. Later revisions are still capable but can show more noise or jailbars depending on the board.
Does the Model 3 really only have mono audio?
Yes. The Model 3 outputs RGB video but its audio is mono only, with no stereo separation and no headphone jack. This is a hardware limitation that cannot be fixed at the cable.
Do I need to mod my console for RGB?
Usually not for the Genesis and Mega Drive, RGB is present on the AV connector natively. You mainly need the correct cable and a display that accepts the signal and its sync.
Why does my console run games too fast or too slow?
You are likely running a game built for a different refresh rate, 60Hz (NTSC) content on a 50Hz (PAL) console or vice versa. A region/refresh switch fixes this.
My audio is muffled. Is the console dying?
Almost certainly not. Muffled or distorted sound is the textbook sign of aged capacitors and is resolved by recapping the audio section.
Can I play homebrew without a flashcart?
Yes, you can run homebrew ROMs in an emulator on a PC or phone. A flashcart is only needed to play on original hardware.
Still stuck?
Work through the relevant troubleshooting page for your specific symptom. Most problems come down to cables, capacitors, the power supply, or dirty contacts.
