Cleaning

Caution: Always unplug the console before cleaning. Never use abrasive cleaners on the case or contacts, and let everything dry fully before reassembling and powering on.

Cleaning and care

Decades of dust, oxidation, and finger oils are the most common reasons an old Genesis or cartridge misbehaves. A careful cleaning often resolves intermittent boots and graphical glitches without any soldering.

  1. Clean cartridge contacts. Dampen a cotton swab with high-purity isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the edge connector until no grime transfers. Avoid the common myth of blowing into carts, moisture from your breath accelerates corrosion.
  2. Clean the cartridge slot. Use a longer swab or a slot-cleaning tool with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oxidation from the console's edge connector pins.
  3. Wipe the case. Use a slightly damp cloth for the shell. For yellowed plastic, a dedicated retrobright process can help, but that is an advanced, optional step.
  4. Service the controller ports and switches. A short burst of contact cleaner on a scratchy power switch or noisy port can restore reliable operation.

Storage

Keep the console and cartridges in a dry, dust-free spot away from direct sunlight. Sunlight both yellows the plastic and can fade cartridge labels over time.
