Running homebrew

Running homebrew

There are three practical ways to run homebrew on the Genesis and Mega Drive, ranging from zero hardware investment to a fully authentic on-console experience.

Emulation

The simplest path is an emulator on a PC or phone. Accurate emulators such as BlastEm and Genesis Plus GX run the vast majority of ROMs flawlessly and are ideal for testing or casual play. Emulation is also forgiving of region and timing quirks, making it the best place to start.

Flashcarts

To play on real hardware, a flashcart loads ROM files from an SD card and presents a menu on the console itself. Popular options include the Mega EverDrive and the Mega SD. Copy your ROMs onto the card, insert the cart, power on, and select a title. This gives you authentic video, audio, and controller feel that emulation cannot fully reproduce.

Real cartridges

Finished homebrew games are frequently sold as professionally manufactured cartridges. These run like any retail title with no setup at all, and they are the way to support developers directly.

Region tip

Some homebrew is built for a specific region or refresh rate. If a title runs too fast, too slow, or refuses to boot, check whether it expects a 50Hz (PAL) or 60Hz (NTSC) console and use a region switch if your hardware has one.

For day-to-day use, a flashcart strikes the best balance between convenience and authenticity.
