Tools and software
Whether you are modding, repairing, or just playing, a modest toolkit covers nearly every task on the Genesis and Mega Drive. Below are the hardware tools and software worth having on hand.
Hardware tools
- Temperature-controlled soldering iron, essential for any mod or recap; a fine tip helps with surface-mount work.
- Desoldering braid and a solder sucker, for removing old capacitors and components cleanly.
- Flux, makes both soldering and desoldering dramatically easier and cleaner.
- Multimeter, for checking continuity on cables and verifying power supply voltage and polarity.
- Security bit set, the console and cartridges use specialized screws; a gamebit driver opens cartridges.
- Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs, for cleaning contacts and removing flux residue.
Software and devices
- BlastEm and Genesis Plus GX, accurate emulators for testing ROMs and homebrew.
- SGDK, the free development kit for writing your own Genesis games in C.
- Mega EverDrive and Mega SD, flashcarts for running ROMs on real hardware.
- RetroTINK, an external scaler for clean HDMI output to modern displays.
Start small
You do not need everything at once. A flashcart and a good RGB cable transform the experience; a soldering setup follows only when you are ready to repair or mod.
