Choosing a Method
There is no single "best" mod, only the right one for your goals, your model, and your comfort with a soldering iron. Use this page to narrow the field before diving into individual guides.
Start with your goal
- I want to play my library easily — Get an SD flashcart (Mega EverDrive Pro or Mega SD). No soldering required.
- I want a sharper picture — Add RGB output. Model 1 gives the best result; Model 3 works but is mono audio only.
- I want to play imports — A switchless region mod, plus cart-slot widening on a Model 1 for physical fit.
- I want the full classic stack — Choose a Model 1 or 2 so you can attach the Sega CD and 32X.
Match to your skill level
| Method | Skill | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|
| Flashcart | None | Fully |
| Cart-slot widening | Light tools | Permanent |
| RGB cable | Soldering (cable) | Yes |
| Switchless region mod | Soldering (board) | Mostly |
Our suggestion
If you are new, begin with a flashcart and an RGB cable. They deliver the biggest quality-of-life jump for the least risk, and neither permanently alters the console.
