This page maps the upgrades covered on the wiki so you can see how they fit together. Mods fall into four broad groups: game loading, video, region, and physical fit, plus the two classic add-ons.
Game loading
SD flashcarts replace your physical library with files on a card. The two leading options are the Mega EverDrive Pro and the Mega SD, both of which can also emulate Sega CD discs. No soldering required.
Video
RGB output is the single biggest picture upgrade. It involves a special cable with a 75-ohm resistor and a coupling capacitor per channel. Model 1 gives the best result; Model 3 is RGB capable but mono audio.
Region and refresh
A switchless mod using MegaDrivePlusPlus firmware lets you toggle region and 50/60 Hz from a controller, removing the limits of a region-locked board.
Physical fit
Cart-slot widening lets a narrow-slot Model 1 accept Japanese cartridges. It is permanent and tool-based rather than electrical.
