Building an RGB cable

Caution: Building a cable involves soldering to small DIN pins. A miswired cable can short the console's video output or feed sync to the wrong line on your display. Verify the pinout for your exact model and test continuity before plugging in.

Building an RGB cable

A homemade RGB SCART cable is one of the most rewarding upgrades you can make. The goal is to route the console's red, green, blue, sync, and audio lines from the DIN connector to the correct pins on a SCART (or other display) connector, with proper grounding throughout.

  1. Identify the pinout. Confirm the DIN layout for your Model 1, 2, or 3. The pin positions for RGB and sync differ between revisions, so do not assume they are identical.
  2. Gather parts. You will need a console-side DIN plug, shielded multicore cable, a SCART hood, and optionally inline resistors or capacitors depending on your display's sync requirements.
  3. Wire the color lines. Connect red, green, and blue to their SCART inputs, each with its own ground return to minimize crosstalk.
  4. Handle sync and audio. Route composite sync to the appropriate SCART pin, add a sync stripper if needed, and wire left and right audio.
  5. Test. Check continuity with a meter, then power on and confirm a stable, correctly colored picture before final assembly.

Keep cable runs short and use proper shielding to avoid picking up interference, which can manifest as a wavy or sparkly image.
