Switchless mod

Switchless Mod

This mod involves soldering on the mainboard and installing a small chip flashed with custom firmware. Incorrect wiring can prevent the console from booting. Work carefully and verify every connection before powering on.

A switchless mod controls region and 50/60 Hz from your controller instead of a physical switch, giving a clean, hole-free console. The popular firmware for this is MegaDrivePlusPlus, which runs on a small programmable chip wired to the board's region and refresh lines.

  1. Flash the chip
Program a microcontroller with MegaDrivePlusPlus firmware before installation.
  2. Identify the board
Confirm your model and VA revision so you tap the correct signals.
  3. Wire the chip
Solder the chip to the region, refresh, reset, and LED lines per the guide.
  4. Map the combo
Set or confirm the controller button combination used to change settings.
  5. Test thoroughly
Cycle through regions and 50/60 Hz from the pad to confirm each works.
  6. Reassemble
Secure the chip, close the shell, and run a final check.

Why switchless

No drilling, no visible switches, and quick changes from the gamepad. Many builds also repurpose the power LED to flash a color indicating the current region.

This is the cleanest region solution and pairs perfectly with a flashcart for worldwide play.
