Model 1
Model 1
The original full-size Genesis / Mega Drive is the enthusiast favorite. It offers the cleanest analog video of the family and full support for both classic add-ons, which makes it the platform of choice for serious modders.
Why modders prefer it
- Best RGB source — Model 1 boards generally produce the sharpest, cleanest RGB image of any revision.
- Stereo capable — Proper stereo audio is available with the right wiring, unlike the mono-only Model 3.
- Full add-on support — Works with both the Sega CD and the 32X.
Cartridge slot notes
Some early Model 1 units have a wider cartridge slot that physically accepts Japanese carts, while later units have a narrower slot. If you want to play imports on a narrow-slot Model 1, the slot can be carefully widened. See the Cart-slot widening page.
Revision matters
Model 1 spans several VA board revisions. Earlier boards are prized for video quality but may need extra care for clean audio. Always check your VA number before following any wiring guide.
If you can only own one console to build up, a Model 1 with an RGB mod, a flashcart, and a region mod is the classic dream setup. It is also the right base if you plan to stack a Sega CD and 32X.
