Safety & Risks

Modifying a console carries real risk. Soldering on a 30-year-old board can lift pads, bridge traces, or damage chips if done carelessly. Work slowly, double-check every connection, and never rush a heat-sensitive joint.

Most of the upgrades on this wiki are safe when done with patience, but understanding what can go wrong helps you avoid it.

Electrical and heat hazards

  • Always unplug the console before opening it. Never solder a powered board.
  • A hot iron causes burns instantly. Use a stand and keep the tip away from cables and skin.
  • Overheating a pad can lift it off the board, sometimes permanently breaking a connection.

Data and hardware risks

  • Flashcarts are low-risk, but a corrupted SD card or wrong firmware file can stop them booting.
  • Cart-slot widening is permanent. Once material is removed, it cannot be put back.
  • Static electricity can damage chips. Ground yourself before handling bare boards.

Know your limits

If a step calls for fine soldering and you are not confident, practice on scrap first or ask an experienced modder. There is no shame in starting with the no-solder upgrades and building up.

Finally, keep the original parts you remove. Many mods are reversible only if you saved the stock components.
