Controllers
Controllers
The Genesis controller story is worth knowing, because some mods and many games depend on which pad you use. The console shipped with a three-button controller and later gained a six-button model.
Three-button vs six-button
- Three-button — The original pad with A, B, C and Start. Works with every game but lacks the extra inputs some later titles expect.
- Six-button — Adds X, Y, Z and Mode. Essential for some fighting games and the preferred pad for most players.
Why it matters for modding
Switchless region and refresh mods are often controlled by holding a button combination at power-on or during reset. A six-button pad gives you more inputs to map those combos to, and the firmware you flash usually documents which buttons trigger region and 50/60 Hz changes.
Compatibility quirk
A small number of older games misbehave with six-button pads. The Mode button exists precisely to force the controller into three-button compatibility mode: hold it while powering on if a game refuses to respond correctly.
Practical advice
Keep at least one six-button controller for everyday play and one three-button pad for the rare incompatible title. If you install a switchless mod, note which controller button combo you assigned so you can change settings later without guessing.
