Region & imports

Region and imports

The Genesis and Mega Drive were sold worldwide under different names and standards, which affects whether a cartridge from one region will run on a console from another. Understanding the two main barriers, electronic region locking and physical cartridge shape, makes importing games straightforward.

Region lockout

Many games check the console's region and refuse to boot, or display a warning, if there is a mismatch. There are also video standard differences: NTSC consoles run at 60Hz, while PAL consoles run at 50Hz, which can make a mismatched game run too fast or too slow even if it does boot.

Physical cartridge differences

Japanese Mega Drive cartridges have a slightly different shape and slot keying than North American Genesis cartridges, so they may not fit without modification. European and North American carts are generally the same shape.

Solutions

A region switch mod adds a physical toggle to select region and 50/60Hz, letting one console play games from anywhere at the correct speed. For the physical fit issue, the case can be trimmed or a passthrough adapter used. Many flashcarts also include region override settings, sidestepping the lockout entirely.

Tip

If an imported game boots but plays sluggishly, you are almost certainly running a 60Hz title on a 50Hz console or vice versa. A region/refresh switch is the proper fix.
