Model 3

The Model 3 is the smallest official Sega revision, a budget redesign released late in the console's life. It plays cartridge games well but carries significant limitations that make it a poor choice for an ambitious build.

The Model 3 has no expansion port, so it cannot use the Sega CD or the 32X at all. If you want either add-on, do not buy a Model 3.

Key limitations

  • Mono audio only — The Model 3 outputs mono sound even though it can produce RGB video.
  • No add-on support — The missing expansion port rules out both classic add-ons.
  • Some compatibility quirks — A handful of games and accessories behave differently on this revision.

What it does well

It is RGB capable, so you can still get a sharp picture, and it accepts the same SD flashcarts as the other models. For a compact, picture-focused cartridge-only setup, it can work.

Choose a Model 3 only if size and price outweigh stereo sound and add-on support. Otherwise a Model 1 or 2 is the better foundation.
