Cartridge not read
Troubleshooting: cartridge not read
When a cartridge produces a black screen, a garbled image, or a freeze at boot, the problem is almost always the electrical connection between the cart and the console rather than a dead game.
Clean the cartridge contacts
Oxidized or grimy edge connectors are the number one cause. Wipe the gold contacts with a cotton swab and high-purity isopropyl alcohol until no residue transfers. Do not blow into the cartridge, breath moisture promotes corrosion over time.
Clean the console slot
The console's edge connector collects dust and oxidation too. Use a slot-cleaning tool or a long swab with alcohol to clean the pins inside the cartridge slot.
Reseat firmly
Insert the cartridge fully and squarely. A cart that sits at a slight angle or is not pushed all the way down will make poor contact and fail to read.
Check region and shape
If a clean, well-seated import still will not boot, you may be hitting region lockout or a physical fit issue between a Japanese cart and a North American console. See the region and imports page.
Still failing?
If one specific cartridge fails on a console that reads everything else cleanly, that game's own board may have a fault, such as a cracked trace or a dead save battery interfering with boot. Test several carts to isolate whether the problem is the game or the console.
