Cart-slot widening

Cart-Slot Widening

This modification is permanent. You remove plastic from the cartridge slot, and it cannot be undone. Proceed only if you are sure you want Japanese cart support on this console.

Some Genesis and later Model 1 units have a narrow cartridge slot that physically blocks Japanese Mega Drive carts, which have tabs of a different shape. Widening the slot lets these imports fit so a region mod can actually run them.

  1. Confirm the need
Check that your slot is the narrow type and that the import cart genuinely will not fit.
  2. Open the console
Remove the shell and the cartridge slot guide so you can work on it safely.
  3. Mark the tabs
Identify the plastic tabs that block the wider Japanese cart shape.
  4. Remove material
Carefully trim the blocking tabs a little at a time, test-fitting often.
  5. Test and reassemble
Confirm an import seats fully, then reassemble the console.

Pair with a region mod

Widening only solves physical fit. To actually boot an import, you still need a region mod or a flashcart that bypasses region checks. Do both for full import support on a Model 1.

Trim slowly. It is easy to remove more plastic, but impossible to put it back.
