Cartridge slot

Warning: Never force a cartridge or cleaning tool into the slot, and always power off and unplug the console first. The slot's spring contacts are easily bent, and a damaged connector is far harder to fix than dirty pins.

Cartridge slot cleaning

Intermittent boots, frozen graphics, or a black screen often come down to poor contact between the cartridge and the console's slot. Dust and oxidation build up on the slot's pins over the years, and a careful cleaning is usually all it takes to restore a reliable connection.

  1. Power down. Turn off and unplug the console, and remove any inserted cartridge.
  2. Clean the cartridge first. Wipe the game's edge connector with isopropyl alcohol on a swab and let it dry; this alone fixes many issues.
  3. Clean the slot. Gently work a soft, alcohol dampened swab across the slot's pins to lift oxidation, taking care not to bend any contacts.
  4. Dry and test. Allow everything to dry fully, then insert a cartridge and confirm it boots reliably several times.

Skip the old myths

Blowing into cartridges introduces moisture that accelerates corrosion, and that habit harms contacts over time. Use isopropyl alcohol and a swab instead. If the slot itself is bent or badly corroded, it can be desoldered and replaced. slot oxidation

For consoles that still misbehave after cleaning, inspect the slot pins under good light for any that sit lower than their neighbors, which indicates a bent contact that may need careful realignment or replacement.
