Super Famicom

Super Famicom

The Super Famicom is the Japanese version of the SNES. It is functionally the same console with a different shell, cartridge shape, and region setup, and it is a popular base for modders.

Why people choose it

  • Native RGB. Super Famicom boards output RGB, and the later Super Famicom Jr offers the same clean single-chip video as the SNES Jr.
  • Cartridge shape. The slot accepts Japanese carts directly and, with region freedom, plays imports.
  • Full flashcart support. The FXPak Pro works without modification.

Region considerations

The Super Famicom is an NTSC, 60Hz region (Japan), sharing video timing with North America but using a different lockout region code. To run North American or PAL cartridges you still need a region-free mod such as SuperCIC, which handles both the lockout and 50/60Hz switching.

Board still matters

As with the SNES, identify whether your Super Famicom is an older multi-chip board or a later 1CHIP / Jr design. The Jr gives the cleanest picture; older boards may want an RGB bypass amp.

Physically, Super Famicom and North American cartridge slots differ, so import play of original carts often pairs a region mod with an adapter or trimmed cartridge tabs.
