SNES Jr (SNS-101)

The SNES Jr is the redesigned, cost-reduced model Nintendo released late in the console's life. It is smaller and rounder than the original, and internally it is one of the cleanest SNES boards you can own.

Strengths

  • Clean native RGB. Like the 1CHIP boards, the Jr outputs sharp video and generally needs no bypass amp.
  • Full flashcart support. The FXPak Pro works exactly as on any other SNES.
  • Compact and durable. The simplified design has fewer points of failure.

Trade-offs

  • No RF output. The Jr drops the RF modulator, so you need a direct video connection.
  • No expansion port. The underside port is gone, which matters only for a few peripherals.
  • Multiout video. It retains the standard multiout, so RGB and other cables still attach.

Region and mods

The Jr still uses a lockout chip, so a SuperCIC region-free mod applies if you want imports and 50/60Hz switching. Because the video is already clean, the Jr is often modded for region freedom only, not for picture quality.

If you value the best out-of-the-box image with minimal soldering, the SNES Jr is an excellent base console.
