Controller issues

Controller issues

Unresponsive buttons, a sticky directional pad, or inputs that register on their own are common with decades old controllers. Nearly all of these problems are fixable with cleaning and minor repair.

Buttons not responding

  • Open the controller and clean the conductive pads on the rubber membranes and the matching board traces with isopropyl alcohol.
  • A worn through conductive pad may need a replacement membrane or conductive repair paint.
  • Reassemble carefully, making sure each membrane and button sits in its correct position.

Intermittent or random inputs

  • Flex the cable while testing; if inputs change, the cord likely has a break near the controller or plug.
  • A damaged cable can be repaired by re-tinning or replacing the affected section.
  • Inspect the connector pins for dirt or bending.

Console side checks

If multiple controllers misbehave in the same port, the problem may be the console's controller port rather than the controllers. Clean the port pins, and test the controllers in another port or on another console to confirm where the fault lies. membrane cable

Most controllers are fully restored by a thorough cleaning. Keep the small d-pad pivot and any springs accounted for during reassembly so the directional pad keeps its proper feel.
