Cleaning
Warning: Always unplug the console and any cartridge before cleaning. Avoid harsh solvents and excess liquid near the board, and never reassemble while anything is still damp. Static and trapped moisture can damage delicate electronics.
Cleaning and care
Decades of dust, oxidation, and grime take a toll on a Super Nintendo. A careful cleaning often resolves intermittent faults and keeps the console looking and running its best. This is the safest entry point into hands on maintenance.
- Disassemble safely. Use the correct security bit to open the shell, then separate the housing from the motherboard, noting where each screw belongs.
- Clean the shell. Wash the plastic housing with mild soap and water away from the electronics, and let it dry fully before reassembly.
- Address the contacts. Gently clean the cartridge slot pins and any edge connectors with isopropyl alcohol on a soft swab to remove oxidation.
- Dust the board. Blow out dust from the motherboard and reassemble only once every part is completely dry.
Yellowed plastic
Old consoles often yellow from light exposure. Enthusiasts use a peroxide based brightening process to restore the original color, but it is optional and unrelated to function. Approach it as a cosmetic project, not a repair. isopropyl maintenance
Regular gentle cleaning prevents many problems before they start. Use isopropyl alcohol rather than household cleaners on contacts, and resist the urge to scrub plated surfaces aggressively, which can wear them down over time.
