Warning: Although a controller carries no dangerous voltage, the small screws, springs, and rubber membranes are easy to lose or tear. Work over a clear surface, keep parts organized, and avoid harsh solvents that can degrade the plastic and conductive pads.
Controller repair
An unresponsive button or a mushy directional pad is one of the most common Super Nintendo complaints, and almost always fixable. The culprit is usually dirt or worn conductive material on the contact pads beneath the buttons rather than a true electronic fault.
- Open the controller. Remove the rear screws, separate the halves, and lay out the buttons, rubber membranes, and circuit board in order.
- Clean the contacts. Wipe the black conductive pads on the membranes and the matching traces on the board with isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth.
- Inspect the cable. Check the cord and connector for breaks if certain inputs drop out intermittently when the cable is moved.
- Reassemble and test. Place each membrane and button back in position, close the shell, and test every input.
When cleaning isn't enough
If a button still fails after cleaning, the conductive pad may be worn through. Replacement membranes and conductive repair paint can restore response. A frayed cable can be re-tinned or replaced where it enters the controller. contacts membrane
Most controllers come back to life with nothing more than a thorough cleaning. Keep the tiny d-pad pivot and any springs accounted for, since losing one can leave the directional pad feeling loose.
