Running homebrew

Getting homebrew onto a real Super Nintendo is straightforward once you have a flash cartridge. The FXPak Pro is the most widely used option: it accepts a standard SD card, reads ROM files directly, and boots them through an on-screen menu without any soldering or console modification.

Basic steps

  1. Format an SD card to FAT32. Smaller cards and a fresh format avoid menu errors.
  2. Copy your ROM files, usually with an .sfc or .smc extension, into a folder on the card.
  3. Insert the card into the flashcart, then insert the cartridge into the console.
  4. Power on, navigate the menu, and select the title you want to launch.

Organizing your card

Keep games in clearly named folders so the menu stays readable. Many users separate homebrew, ROM hacks, and any MSU-1 audio packs into their own directories. MSU-1 titles need their accompanying audio tracks placed alongside the ROM, or the enhanced music will not play. FAT32 .sfc

Save data tips

Battery and SRAM saves are written to the SD card by the flashcart. Power the console off from a menu or after the game has finished writing to avoid corrupting a save file. Back up your saves folder periodically.

Once your card is set up, swapping between titles is as simple as resetting the console. No reflashing is required between games, which makes the FXPak Pro ideal for testing and casual play alike.
