RGB output

RGB is the highest quality analog signal the Super Nintendo can produce. Instead of combining the picture into one muddy composite signal, RGB sends the red, green, and blue color channels separately, giving a sharp, vivid image when fed into a compatible display or upscaler.

What you need

  • A display that accepts RGB, commonly through a SCART connector in Europe or a professional video monitor.
  • An external upscaler if you want to view RGB on a modern HDMI television.
  • The correct RGB cable for your console, matched to its revision.

The catch is that not every SNES outputs RGB equally well. The signal strength and cleanliness vary by board revision, which determines whether you can simply plug in a cable or need a small internal modification first. RGB SCART

Revision matters

The later single chip 1CHIP consoles produce the cleanest RGB and often need only a cable, though many benefit from a bypass for the sharpest result. Older multi chip boards usually require a bypass amplifier to remove noise. The compact SNES Jr has no RGB circuitry at all and needs an amp added to output RGB.
