Import play
Import play
Playing original cartridges from other regions on the SNES involves two hurdles: the lockout chip and the cartridge slot shape. Both have well-understood solutions.
The lockout barrier
The console's CIC checks a cartridge's region before booting. A SuperCIC region-free mod defeats this, and also switches 50/60Hz so an imported game runs at the correct speed rather than too fast or too slow.
The physical slot
The SNES and Super Famicom slots differ in shape, so playing a Japanese cart in a North American console (or vice versa) usually needs a cartridge adapter or trimmed plastic tabs. NTSC and PAL carts share the same shape, so between those two regions only the region mod is needed.
| Combination | Region mod | Adapter / trim |
|---|---|---|
| PAL console + NTSC cart | SuperCIC | Not needed |
| SNES + Super Famicom cart | SuperCIC | Adapter or trim |
| Any region via flashcart | Auto-patched | Multi-region shell |
The easy route
If you do not need original cartridges, the FXPak Pro auto-patches region and loads any region's games from one card, skipping both hurdles entirely.
