MSU-1 audio
MSU-1 enhanced audio
The MSU-1 is a media enhancement feature originally conceived for emulators and later supported by hardware flash cartridges. It allows a Super Nintendo game to stream high quality, CD style audio and even full motion video from storage, far beyond what the console's native sound chip could produce on its own.
In practice, the most exciting use is replacing a game's original sequenced music with recorded audio tracks. A community patch tells the ROM where to find the streamed music, and the flashcart feeds those tracks from the SD card during play. streamed audio PCM
How it works
- A patch adds MSU-1 calls to a compatible game, redirecting music playback.
- Audio tracks are stored as PCM files alongside the patched ROM.
- The flashcart streams the correct track on demand, syncing it to gameplay.
Hardware support
The FXPak Pro implements MSU-1, so these enhanced soundtracks play on a real console. Other flash cartridges may or may not support the feature, so check compatibility before downloading large audio packs.
Popular projects include orchestral and arranged soundtracks for well known role playing and action titles. The files can be large, often hundreds of megabytes per game, so a roomy SD card helps. Place every track in the folder the patch expects, keep filenames intact, and the music will swap seamlessly the moment the game starts.
