ROM hacks
ROM hacks
A ROM hack is a modified version of an existing game. Rather than building a title from scratch, a hacker edits the original ROM to change levels, graphics, dialogue, difficulty, or mechanics. The Super Nintendo has one of the richest hacking communities of any console, with thousands of projects spanning every popular franchise.
Common kinds of hacks
- Level hacks that replace the original stages with brand new designs.
- Translation patches that bring Japan only games into English and other languages.
- Quality of life hacks that fix bugs, rebalance gameplay, or add modern conveniences.
- Total conversions that reuse an engine to tell an entirely different story.
Hacks are almost always distributed as patch files rather than complete ROMs, for legal reasons. You apply the patch to your own legally obtained copy of the game using a patching utility, which produces the modified ROM. patch IPS/BPS
Applying a patch
Most patches use the IPS or BPS format. A patching tool combines the patch with your unmodified ROM to create the hacked version. BPS patches verify the source file, so if patching fails, your base ROM likely differs from the one the author used. Always keep a clean backup.
Once patched, the resulting ROM loads from your flashcart exactly like any other game. Read each project's readme for the expected base version and any region requirements before you begin.
