SNES Jr RGB

Warning: The SNES Jr lacks RGB output circuitry, so this mod means adding an amplifier and soldering directly to the video chip's fine pins. This is delicate work that can easily damage the board. Attempt it only with proper tools, magnification, and steady hands.

SNES Jr RGB mod

The compact, redesigned SNES Jr (the second model) is a great console in many ways, but Nintendo stripped out the RGB output circuitry to cut costs. Out of the box it manages only composite. Producing RGB therefore requires adding an external amplifier and pulling the color signals from the video encoder chip itself.

  1. Confirm the model. Identify the SNES Jr board specifically, since the tap points and the need for an amp are unique to it.
  2. Locate the RGB pins. Find the fine pitch pins on the video encoder that carry the red, green, and blue signals.
  3. Install the bypass amp. Solder thin wires from those pins to an RGB amplifier board, then route the buffered outputs to the multi-out.
  4. Test thoroughly. Check each color channel for correct levels and absence of noise before sealing the console.

Difficulty note

Because the source pins are small and closely spaced, this is among the harder common SNES mods. A fine tip iron, flux, and magnification make the difference between a clean result and lifted pads. SNES Jr bypass amp
