Controllers
Controllers
Controllers rarely need modding on the SNES, but a few compatibility points are worth knowing, especially when mixing regions.
Cross-region controllers
SNES and Super Famicom controllers use the same electrical protocol, so a Japanese pad works on a North American console and vice versa. The connectors are physically compatible across these regions, making controllers one of the easiest things to share.
Peripherals
- Multitap — Adds extra controller ports for multiplayer games that support it.
- Light guns and the Super Scope — Depend on CRT timing and generally do not work on modern flat panels.
- Mouse — Supported by a handful of titles and works across regions.
Display caveat
Anything that relies on the screen drawing a scanline at a precise moment, like light guns, expects a CRT. On modern displays these peripherals usually fail regardless of region or mods, so plan your setup around the controller types you actually want to use.
For flashcart and region-free setups, no controller changes are required; standard pads work normally once the console itself is modded.
