RGB PPU swap

Warning: This advanced repair involves desoldering large multi pin chips from a donor and recipient board. The PPU chips are delicate and the process risks damaging both boards. Only experienced modders with hot air equipment should attempt it.

RGB PPU swap

The Super Nintendo's picture is generated by two PPU (Picture Processing Unit) chips. Some consoles, particularly certain SNES Jr units, ship with PPU revisions that complicate RGB output or produce a less clean signal. Swapping in PPUs from a known good donor board can enable or improve RGB on a console that otherwise resists it.

  1. Source compatible PPUs. Obtain a donor board whose PPU pair is known to support clean RGB output and matches your console's requirements.
  2. Remove the chips. Use hot air to carefully lift both the donor and recipient PPUs without lifting pads or damaging neighboring components.
  3. Fit the donor chips. Align and reflow the donor PPUs onto the recipient board, verifying every pin makes solid contact.
  4. Pair with an amp if needed. Combine the swap with the appropriate RGB amp or bypass for that revision, then test the output.

A last resort

This is among the most involved SNES mods and is usually reserved for cases where a simpler amp or bypass cannot deliver acceptable RGB on a stubborn board. Most consoles never need it. PPU advanced

Because it requires removing and reseating large chips, success depends heavily on technique and equipment. If you are not fully confident with hot air rework, a specialist is strongly recommended.
