Save management

Save management

How you handle saves depends on whether you play from a flashcart or original cartridges. The flashcart makes saves far easier to protect and move around.

Flashcart saves

The FXPak Pro writes save data to the SD card, so your progress lives in ordinary files you can back up. Many games also support in-menu save states for instant snapshots. Because saves are just files, copying the card to your computer gives you a complete, safe backup.

Original cartridge saves

Real cartridges store saves in onboard memory, historically kept alive by a small battery. After decades, these batteries can die and erase saves. Replacing the battery restores save retention, though doing so usually wipes any existing save in the process.

Back up regularly

For the flashcart, copy your SD card contents to a computer now and then so a card failure never costs your progress. For original carts, consider a battery replacement on any cherished game whose save no longer holds.

Always power down and safely remove the SD card before pulling it out. Yanking the card mid-write can corrupt save files or the flashcart menu.
